Connecting the Dots at an Early Age
We launched Makarios Youth Prevention Project in 2018 and began hosting a few events aimed to educate and deter youth of color from developing criminal behaviors and from entering the criminal justice system. One 12-year-old reached out to us and expressed interest in one day having a career in law enforcement. I called one of my best friends and brothers Memo Arrubla, who is on the Phoenix Police Department's Community Relations Team and he took time this evening to speak with this young man about what it’s like to be an Officer and gave him a tour and answered questions. Memo, asked this young man, why do you want to be in law enforcement. He replied, "I see people doing wrong all around me and I don't like it. I want to stop people from hurting others and teach other kids that they don’t have to do wrong." Today was a good day!
